his is an original 19th-century magic lantern lightning effect plate, created using the engraved / scratched-through method rather than the shallow etched style. The lightning channels on this plate are fully cut through the darkened coating, allowing intense light to flash through when projected—producing a dramatic lightning strike effect.
These hand-made effect plates were used in early theatrical lantern shows to simulate storms, fireworks, and supernatural scenes. Each lightning pattern was individually scratched by the slide maker, so no two plates are exactly alike.
Details
• Technique: Engraved / scratched-through lines (NOT etched)
• Material: Glass plate with dark coating, cut through to clear glass
• Subject: Multi-branch lightning strike
• Era: c.1880–1900
• Condition: Wear from age, consistent with use; displays beautifully when illuminated
This is a genuine, uncommon effect slide and a great piece for collectors of early optical devices, magic lantern props, or Victorian theatrical ephemera.
